And yes we are in Romblon, on a secure-seeming mooring in a sheltered little bay.  Romblon – marble capital of the Philippines!

Marble beasties
Our passengers, Chester and Lorraine, turned up faithfully just before 8am yesterday.

They were very nice shipmates – full of useful information but not too intrusive.

But poor Lorraine was sick nearly all the way to our anchorage at Calatrava, on Tablas Island…

Very rolly

It was indeed a rough trip and we didn’t make it all the way to Romblon.  Our anchorage was safe, near what seemed to be a pretty little town, but we tossed and rolled and rolled all night.

Calatrava (Tablas Island)
At sunset we had a fishing boat right next to us, with a happy family group – not sure how they all fitted on board, but they obviously managed!

As soon as we had settled on our Romblon YC mooring, we were invaded by cheery boys, who dived in with much commotion, and swam out

to use 2XS as an even better diving platform than the harbour wall.

They were thrilled when we told them they could have our cans, and, even better, when we let them use the can crusher.  They set up a very keen and speedy assembly line.

I had a lovely swim, along the coastline, not up and down under the boat – much more interesting!

As we were leaving Boracay, we could see the other side of the island, where we had thought there were only mangroves.  There are in fact beautiful beaches; it really is a glorious little island.  But…it is under threat.  The waves were too violent for me to be able to get steady enough to take a photo, but a large chunk of the island is under development.  HUGE development!   Thousands of condominiums, villas, a modern shopping mall, and, sooner rather than later, a casino… There is a large scar on the hillside leading down to the beaches – all four of us sighed deeply at the sight.

PM

We have now had a bit of a stroll around Romblon, Romblon.  VERY different to Boracay…

I was very tickled to find a tricycle with a vague attempt at my name… Most people do find it extremely difficult to spell so this was a reasonable attempt, all things considered!

Birthday today:

Stuart Cook!  Bike rider and fisherman extraordinaire!

  2. A message for Pete. In heard on the radio that there is an anthropologist advocating that we keep beer can rings as they are an excellent way to show changes throughout history!
