5th January - 2XS in Kuah - sea otters in Danga Bay - Tasmania

Sunday 5th January

2XS in Kuah

Pete rang yesterday, from Kuah, the main town on Langkawi.  He has left our safe little position in Rebak marina and is now anchored alongside Screensaver and Settlement, within easy reach of the dinghy dock in town.  He rang Mr Yeong from Multiquip, who had told him on Wednesday that the long-awaited batteries were winging their way (heavily…) from Singapore and that they would be there, no problems, on Saturday.  But this was just a soothing little story…the batteries aren’t there; they MIGHT be, on Monday… 2XS is due in Phuket on Monday, 120 nautical miles away, to have the batteries installed by a trusty team in one of the island marinas.  Pete sounded quite philosophical; he has been waiting/hoping for many weeks – he is used to it!

Sea otters

Cheryl and Phil (SV Adagio) spent a year in Edinburgh, when Cheryl managed to arrange an exchange teaching position.  They had a most wonderful year, in spite of being on an Australian salary when the euro was worth three times our poor beleaguered dollar.

During their travels around Scotland, they spent a chilly afternoon hiding in a hide - where else would one hide??  Patiently waiting to see otters.  They had been promised at least one or two sea otters, but…nada.

So imagine their surprise, when they were in the filthy khaki waters of Danga Bay Marina, to find a whole family of sea otters, larger than life, frolicking on the sand piles not far from their boat.  No need for a hide; the otters were very pleased and comfortable with their lot in life, and showed no hint of shyness.

I proudly showed Cheryl my otter photo, which is really quite amazing in that it shows the sand piles which are being dumped in huge quantities, and the high rise building in the background which are being built at rapid speed on reclaimed ground.  She said that one of their boat neighbours took a lovely otter photo, in which one of the otter was gracefully arching its back. It was only on closer inspection that they realised the otter was doing a great big poo…
