21st January - birthdays - Koh Lipe/Ko Lipe (whatever...)

Tuesday 21st January

Our darling Zoe is four today.  Beautiful, charming, clever, eccentric.  I do hope she is available for festivities today… She is such an asset to our family.

Yet another fabulous Thai island…

This time we are anchored off Ko Lipe, which is extremely pretty.  Not spectacular like Ko Phi Phi but gorgeous nonetheless.  And not such a BOOMBOOM party island.

We are going to have a whole day here, wandering along the beaches and eating the beautiful Thai food.  Some of us need this break more than others although we all have our wounds… Pete is covered with big red inflamed bits, probably form his small nap in the sand on the beach at Ko Ro Nok.  I was in a hammock off the ground so I didn’t suffer this infestation.)  James has had some sort of food poisoning and spent a lot of time feeding fish over the back of the boat.  This didn’t last long but was not very nice for the duration.  Bron had been very brave but…just a bit seasick.  I have filled her with Kwell and encouraged her to lie on the couch for most of the time during our all-day passage from Ko Rok Nok to Ko Lipe.   As for me…bad stomach cramps and much loss of all of my meals of the past few days.   Never mind; I slept VERY well and didn’t get up till 9am so…all is well!

James unimpressed...
James blames the cats in the restaurant on Ko Rok Nok… I don’t think so; I blame the fish.

And today will be a lovely day!

We did a 2½  hour detour to get here yesterday.  James had read in Lonely Planet that an outcrop of rocks (Hin Muang) somewhere not far from Koh Rok Nok is the best diving site in Thailand.  So – let’s go there, on the way to Koh Lipe!  Weehee!  Yesterday it was very windy, with rock & roll sea, big waves… We excavated James from his bunk and his eyes lit up.  Looking good! He said…or maybe he didn’t, but none of the rest of us thought it looked good at all.  It looked extremely forbidding and dangerous, with big waves surging around the rocks.  There were a few dive boats nearby, with intrepid divers exploring the depths.   There was no way in the world I was going to set even a toe in this forbidding water, with my little pink snorkel & flipper combo…

Swim here??  I don't think so...

Today is a BIG birthdayday.  More birthdaypeople than Zoe!

Harry, Pete’s grandson has reached double numbers – ten today!  Pete’s first three grandchildren were all born within a few months; they are all ten now.  (Ella, Grace, Harry.)  And here he is in a photo with, coincidentally, Pete’s niece Melissa (chef and personal trainer extraordinaire,) who also is celebrating her birthday today.

Lastly – Steve Mason, our lovely Flinders Island friend (and distant cousin of Pete’s.)  We love having Steve as crew on the boat.  He is always cheery, happy, helpful, if sometimes…a little green around the gills.

Happy birthday to all of these very nice people.
