21st July - BBQ at Darwin Sailing Club - Territory Wildlife Park - Berry Springs

Sunday 21st July

Last night was fun, at the sailing club.  About 250 people, all full of joy and excitement at the Indonesian Adventure to come.  We caught up with our friends from along the way up the coast, and met some new people, as was to be expected.

Mercedes (from the German yacht Forty Two) had a bold new haircut and looked great:

We rode our bikes there through the sunset, past a whole series of happy people picnicking along the clifftop on the edge of Fannie Bay, and rode back in the dark, with head torches.  (Mercedes took a photo of us be-torched, as proof.)

Today we have had a day off and we have been OUT into the countryside, for a wonderful day being tourists.

Our kind Tasmanian friends Roseanne and Jason took us to the Territory Wildlife Park, about an hour and a half away.

It was very beautiful there, and a very impressive park, with beautiful boardwalks, happy wildflife, beautiful forest.

The birds were particularly fabulous.

Roseanne posed with a tawny frogmouth

which seemed to cause a bit of confusion for Pete and Jason

I think Pete’s and my highlight was seeing a jabiru (black necked stork…) take flight and glide off on its beautiful black and white wings.  I was so entranced I didn’t think to lift my camera…

The birds of prey were wonderful.  After the show, we met some of the rescued raptors...Just look a this sooky wedgetail eagle!  I said to Adam, the keeper, "Goodness, she does love you, doesn't she," and he said, "NO.  Eagles don't love anyone!  They are eagles!"

We had a delicious picnic at about 1.30 and then went back to our explorations, refreshed and invigorated. It was about 5.30 buy the time we had finished.  Jason had planned, before he realized how much there was to see at the wildlife park, for us to spend the afternoon at Berry Springs Park…

and look how glorious it is!  I did paddle around a bit, in the clear, warm water, but we really didn’t have time for a swim.

Next time…

(How are our midgie bites??  HORRIBLE!!!!)

  2. My favourite photo here is the one of you and Pete, it reminds me very much of the scene from Grease when the bad lady takes over dancing with John Travolta, leaving Olivia to storm out in a pouty huff. xxx
