27th January - Coron (Philippines) - water pump problems etc etc - dining out in Coron

Tuesday 27th January 2015

Our regular sea eagle flies above Coron
Australia Day in Coron was a day of workworkwork for Pete.

Fixing the solar panels
I couldn’t help…occasionally I would offer but my only roles really were to make sure that Pete keep moving into the shade.  And to keep up a supply of cold blackcurrant juice.

Fixing the water pump #1
He got up at 5.30 and researched the solar panel problem.  In the end he did a sketch, to be emailed to James, who will take it to Jaycar in Hobart, to try to solve the wiring issues.  (Imagine how much help I would have been with this…My only contribution was to take a photo of the sketch and email it to James.  NOT very labour –intensive!)

Pete's nifty solar panel sketch
And then…the water pump… Many many hours of sitting and dismantling and reassembling and quietly cursing.  But – now we have a functioning water system; we can turn taps on and off without having to scamper up and down stairs to turn on the pump and then turn it off again very quickly before the motor burns out.  Bliss!  I will never take this facility for granted!

I love the cute dinghy hanging off the back of the big yellow boat (Ona) next to 2XS
Last night we went into the little town for a meal.  We were actually quite keen to cook on board but we have very few ingredients.  I offered Pete pasta with baked beans with an egg on top, or even rice with sardines, but…he wasn’t tempted.  It actually doesn’t cost very much more to eat in a restaurant, in Coron, so we were quite happy to find our way to a crowded little place in the main top street, where we shared a table with very nice people from different parts of the world.

Ellen and Jugo
Ellen and Jugo were from Belgium and Finland.

Not sure where the other two were from – they were more in Pete’s conversational direction – but they too were cheery and delightful.

But our first encounter was with a rather unprepossessing looking cat brushing against our legs under the table…

Hmmm…I tried not to look at the large and forbidding sign right opposite me…

And I tried not to make eye contact with Pete, who doesn’t approve of begging, when Jugo and I gave her a nice meal of left-overs from our plates.  She was, after all, about to give birth to a large litter of kittens.

Later in the morning…

Actually…I shouldn’t have been as joyful about the water pump because this morning…dead as a dodo.  POOR Pete.  He will have another day of this…

Fixing the water pump #2
I have been trying to help, tying loops in thin bits of cotton, and then dental floss, trying to hold back tiny springs so that the pump parts can be rejoined without the springs bouncing and clamping before they are called upon so to do.  So far…not so good… The floss bit worked but now Pete has to dismantle everything in the pump cupboard and start from scratch.  Again… And it is HOT in the pump cupboard…

  1. Well that is certainly a stressful tale of boys fixing toys. Love the diagram, the bucket seat and the innovations. Keep pouring those ice cold black currant drinks!
