17th December - more storms and hail - kookaburras in Tasmania

Wednesday 17th December

Yesterday the storm loomed a second time

And the hail came crashing down.

I feel so sorry for the cherry farmers…and for anyone who might have planned a jolly al fresco entertainment for the late afternoon.

Our own al fresco entertainment at the Waterworks went ahead regardless of the icy wind whistling through the stone shelter.  We had all of the shutters shut and we huddled around the table, eating as quickly as possible.

We are however True Tasmanians so we were resolutely cheerful.

The local kookaburras were also very cheerful.  They serenaded us most raucously, and gathered around to eat the scraps.  Yes they are splendid birds but I regard them with a jaundiced eye.  They don’t really belong on the island; they invaded a few decades ago, flying south and colonising ruthlessly.  They have chased away many of our more delicate small birds and really – they are a pest!

So why haven’t I made any progress in my 6-kilo quest??

Well the food here is so very delicious…
