13th December - whales (and seals) off Bruny - white goshawk

Saturday 13th December

I went on a Pennicot Wilderness Journey down to Seal Rocks, off the south coast of Bruny Island, quite a few years ago, with Nicky, Gavin, Hamish and Angus.  The boys were then…very small.  Angus was probably about two and a half.  He HATED it!  It was quite chilly and windy and he sobbed dismally, until one of us had the bright idea of putting one of the sturdy raincoats thoughtfully provided by the crew right over his head.  He subsided quite happily, like a canary being put to sleep for the night…

I would love to do another tour.  And I am sure Hamish and Angus would find it all totally thrilling now, without a need to be muffled under waterproof coating.

This photo was on Facebook yesterday – WOW!!  We didn’t see any whales, or even a small dolphin, so these people were very lucky.  We DID see many seals – fascinating and lovely they are, but OH so smelly, when you get close to the rocks where they loll about, digest their fishy dinner, and poo!!!

This morning a bit of nature on the slopes of Mt Wellington… A flash of white went past the bedroom window so I crept outside with my camera – and yes the local white goshawk was resting in a tree.
