18th July 2017 - aboard Arctic Fox - Bath (UK)

Tuesday 18th July 2017

Galley!
Oh dear and oh no…no worries; we are fine.  We are back on our darling Arctic Fox

having a G & T before venturing on our next activity at 6.30.  On the canal  path Pete made friends with Lesley, a nice woman from Virginia…with the most terribly blistered feet!  She and her husband have just done a 100 mile walk from the Cotswolds.  It was supposed to take ten days but they did it in six… She was limping off to Tescos to buy wine!!  They are off to London tomorrow.  We told them to take hop-on/hop-off buses, and to make sure to go to the Aldwych Theatre to see Beautiful.  That will be good for their feet!

Ouch!
We have had an extremely fabulous Bath Day.

What a glorious city!  It reminds us a lot of Hobart (very 1820s) except that it is built in a series of cascading terraces.

Just marvelous!

And we are so lucky…it was warm and balmy – 27 degrees, sunny, calm.

First thing in the morning, along the canal path, I met two dear little tweenies selling cakes…Hannah and Mary, full of giggles.  I asked them where we should go in Bath and they said, “Ummm…you could go to the pictures?  Or you could go to Victoria Gardens.  It is nice and clean.”  I bought some of their oatmeal cakey things, took their photo, and wished them well.

We walked down into town (about ten minutes from Arctic Fox…) and, just near the Abbey (GORGEOUS!!  Flying buttresses!!)

I saw a very cute dog. I spoke to her lovingly and her men were wreathed in smiles – they were some of our Chicago helpers from the locks the day before!  We know people!

I don’t know this man and his dog, but I thought they looked very picturesque, crossing the bridge.

Just near the Abbey there is a tiny modest church for the Seventh Day Adventists.  And an even plainer one for the Quakers.

Our first stop (water, coffee, toilet,) was at the Huntsman Inn.

We love this pub and are going there for dinner tonight.  Old but light and spacious.

And I loved their blackboard…very accurate for me.  Pete doesn’t suffer from hangriness but…I SO do!!

Next door to the Huntsman is Sally Lunn, old and venerable shopfront.

(Bath is full of old and venerable things…)

We bought tickets for the hop-on/hop-off bus and this is highly recommended!  Our first trip was the Skyline tour, with head phone tour guide.  Informative and interesting and beautiful.

Pete and Sally on the bus top
The next trip…we had Sally, a real life guide, on the top of the bus.  Loved her!  Funny and witty and full of enthusiasm.

Our last adventure for the afternoon was the Roman Baths.  Amazing, beautifully presented, fascinating.

The Gorgon!!

With some highlight commentary by my darling friend Bill Bryson.  (I am a big fan!)
