23rd May - Pulau Kapas (East Malaysia)

Friday 23rd May

It is beautiful here in our sandy anchorage surrounded by large coral bommies.

Six of the other rally boats have arrived so we are forming a small village-on-the-sea.

I have spent a large percentage of my time in the warm, clear water and am very pleased to report that Pete joined me for a very long swim before lunch.  He enjoyed it very much and did NOT, for once, suffer from cramp, sunburn, flooding mask.  Nor did he get bitten by the mysterious creatures which usually sting him as soon as he steps into the sea.  A big win!

The coral here is spectacular – hundreds of large bommies.  Some of them are almost fluorescent, blue and white.  Others are large and spread out for many metres, in pleasing shades of dusky pink.  And this, of course, is the moment for my underwater camera to say…NO!  I have put it back in the basket to have a good hard think and I hope it has a better answer next time I get into the water!

Some of the boats which ere expected to be in the rally have suffered misfortune.  An English yacht was struck by lightning in Danga Bay.*  This wiped out most of the electronic on the boat and so far the insurance bill has been over $30,000…

* This was the first marina we went to in Malaysia, in Johor Baru.  It was a nice marina in that the people were very friendly and helpful but…the water is filthy, with , or so I have heard, the occasional corpse floating by.  There are MANY mosquitoes; there are only two shower for all of the yachties to share, and…there is no beautiful cool pool, or Happy Hour Beach Bar!  So if one were to be struck by lightning and stuck in a marina – how much nicer if it were on Rebak Island…
