Last night we had a Tasmanian Gala Dinner.
No little meals in pretty cardboard lunchboxes…
We loved these little mystery packages, which we would eat, sometimes,
balanced on our laps, or in cars touring remote bits of the Indonesian
archipelago. Well no not usually the
Gala Dinners…I am being a bit unfair.
The boxes were usually for lunch.
Dinners would sit for many hours in slightly warm bain maries while we listened
to speeches… And no we did not get salmonella!
Last night’s dinner was a tour de force. 200 people at the University Club. Each table of twelve or so was served at much
the same time, with three delicious courses (alternate drop, chicken and eye
fillet.) I think I will write to the head
chef, or kitchen manager and congratulate them.
And yes it was a great night.
Many 10-minute speeches (snapshots, they called them,) some more interesting
and appropriate than others. (The young
woman who told us about an ostrich corpse puking green slime all over her should
have been told that this was NOT a topic to be introduced between main course
and dessert…)
Pete was very happy, catching up with friends and colleagues and
lecturers from 50 years ago. Nearly everyone
he was at uni with is still working, one way or another, in agriculture, doing innovative,
interesting, useful things.
I too met some very nice people – yet more New BFFs!! I was very charmed to meet his (slightly distant…)
cousin Rob. We sat with Rob for quite a
long time as the crowd was dispersing (and yes we were the last to leave…) Both
Pete and Rob were convinced that the other had the best treehouse in the world –
higher, bigger, more bedecked with ropes and ladders and fireman’s poles…
Yesterday we received an email from Ingvar – I had written to him re
Pete’s eye because he had been very concerned and had operated on many dogs
with the same condition. His opinion was
very important to us! He and Seija are
going home to Sweden for a few weeks, for medical and family reasons.
We put up the boat
at Nongsa Point Marina just opposite Singapore. I have to fix a cait extension
and a guaranty and it cost 250 US dollar. I had done at reservation at Danga
Bay as early as 2/8 but when I mailed my arrival time they had lost the
reservation and was fully booked! and so was all the other marinas to. Port
Dickson had a space but it is far from Singapore and our fly tickets.
Well on mature reflection, how fortunate that we nicked into Danga
Bay marina, with a reservation, ahead of most of the Sail Indonesia fleet…
It would have been just a wee bit more complicated had we not had a safe and secure place to leave 2XS...

Today is the beginning of the Headlam
Family Weekend…and a few oldchums from last night are coming for coffee at 9.30
so I need to go and start rushing around a bit…
