19th October - sailing isnot always funfunfun

Saturday 19th October

First a random photo from Bali.  We were very interested watching the workmen carefully making beautiful flower patterns on the paths surrounding the temple on the lake. So intricate, so labour-intensive.

Our Tasmanian friend (and Pete’s cousin) Julie enjoys sailing.  A bit… A few years ago she spent a happy week or so pootling round the Bay of Islands in New Zealand, with some friends.  Lovely.  She had fun, made herself useful, and it was generally deemed to be a great success.

A year or so later the same people contacted her and said that as it had all gone so well in New Zealand, maybe she would like to crew on the boat from Auckland to the Cook Islands.  Well, why not??  It turned out to be not quite so much fun… Twenty one days at sea without a break… I found the three nights we did from Darwin to Kupang to be exhausting, with three hour watches interspersed with six hour sleeps… I am not sure I would survive twenty one days AND NIGHTS!!  Added to this, Julie’s bunk was a small narrow affair right next to the engines, and the skipper felt the need to tinker noisily with his machinery whenever it was Julie’s turn to sleep…Fun?  Not so much…
