22nd December - renting a car on Langkawi - Seven Wells waterfall

Sunday 22nd December

Yesterday we hired a car from the legendary Mr Din, on “mainland” Langkawi.  Mr Din is legendary for the state of his cars – cheap (30 ringgits = $10 per day…) and very VERY nasty!

Frederica, one of our neighbours on A Dock in the marina, told me that last time she hired a DinCar one of the back tyres blew out as she was driving sedately up the highway.  She got out to change it but – no jack, no spare.  She rang Mr Din who sent a minion to change it.  Next time she rang to book a car, he shouted at her and said, NO!  I will not hire you any more cars!  You exploded one of my tyres!

So we had been warned…

Our little Daihatsu Charade looked OK, red and shiny.    But inside the poor little thing was sadly neglected.  For starters, it didn’t have so much as a drop of oil in it.  Pete checked with the dipstick, because after the first few minutes we were wondering why it was making such ghastly noises.  Dry as a chip, said Pete.   On the flat it was just OK, chugging along with only a few faint sounds of despair.  But idling at traffic lights was agony, as was going up even the mildest of hills.

We did, however, manage to get a few things done.  First a cup of coffee at a café on Cenang Beach, then Back to Multequip, where Pete took possession of his new big Honda generator, and a few spare bottles of oil for the car.

We then braved the traffic (RedCar, as I said, hates idling and it was touch and go where it would survive having to stop at a few sets of lights) and went to the Yacht Club to get some new fenders, and a Thai flag.   They had run out of everything – people buying up big, at Christmas? – so we had lunch on the cool, breezy deck.

Pete LOVED his!
We wanted to go on the cable car but there were very long queues and we would have had to wait till 5.00 to get up, and 6.00 to comeback down, so we gave up for now and went to the Seven Wells waterfall nearby.  This was just beautiful, once we survived the walk (634 steps…yes, I counted!)
