23rd June - Pulau Tiga toKota Kinabalu (Sabah, Borneo)

Monday 23rd June

We have arrived in Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, and…yes, we are t-i-r-e-d.  And hot, and itchy, because small invisible bitey things have been biting us.  Other than that we are well and happy.  Of course!

Our anchorage, outside the marina, is very pleasant but there is a swell and all of the boats are rocking and rolling on their anchor chains.

On the way here we had a night at Pulau Tiga.  The water was gorgeous, all green and crystal clear.  I was swimming around within seconds of anchoring, looking for the coral, but, before I found the reef…jellyfish found me…so I got out quick smart!

At four o’clock there was a rally meeting in the main hall of the marina, which is also a small cinema.  Lovely and cool!  They gave us beautiful cold little bottles of water, and floating key-rings – we were set for a great session!

The power point slideshow presentation, by a most dynamic local enthusiast, aged 74 and FULL of energy, was sensational.  I didn’t get bored, or even sleepy.  He bombarded us with images, facts, figures, ideas.  I was so entranced I didn’t make notes, but I did take a slightly blurry photo…

Our lively presenter was a type of Tommy Hafey
It would seem that Sabah is a wildlife paradise…many national parks, and marine reserves.  And it all looks SO beautiful…

Tomorrow we are going to take a bus into Kota Kinabalu to have a quick look before we set off towards Kudat and the glory of the islands off the coast of this beautiful state.

Yesterday was Felix’s fourth birthday.  He is such a little nature lover a trip to the Salmon Ponds, about an hour out of Hobart, was the perfect choice.  All calm and peaceful and pretty, with many fish of different sizes.  Claire said it was a glorious sunny day in Hobart but…in the Derwent Valley the Bridgewater Jerry sat there all day and it was very chilly.

But darling Felix had a lovely day.  He is still very much his own person, making up interesting and useful vocabulary – viewty, for example, or a type of Gavin, that sort of thing.  He loves nature and is interested in the world around him, and seems blissfully unaware of any ructions going on around him in the world of four year olds.

  1. Given the way his parents have funny names for everything, I don't think the apple falls far from the tree.
