Saturday 5th April
I am not going to
gush…well maybe I will, why not??
Having coffee in WiFi cafe overlooking these lovely rooftops, and lake Toba |
Samosir Island is
a magic place. So far we don’t really
know why…It just emanates peace and harmony.
(One wonderful
thing happened in Parapat.**** We got our laundry done! And it was VERY cheap – less than $10 for
about twelve items. Our clothes have
never been as soft, fluffy, pristine!!)
We have met three
Europeans so far who say it is their very favourite place. Claude (German) first came here 46 years ago
and has now been here twelve times. Katy
(German) runs a lovely little guest accommodation place (it was full, we
couldn’t stay there,) and she has been here for nearly four years. She says she just loves it; the climate is
perfect and it is so peaceful and quiet.
The opposite of Germany… And a young bloke we met in Parapat said he was
very sad to be leaving after three weeks on the island. “I will be back!” He said. We asked all of them what there is to do on
Samosir, and they say, “Nothing, really.”
Music to our ears…no sights to see, no museums, no botanical gardens…
Mind you as far as
I can tell this place is botanical gardens in its own right. It is so warm and wet everything grows thick
and lush and glorious.
Rain in Parapat - it REALLY rains in this part of the world! |
This morning we
moved to a most blissful little room right on the water’s edge. We spent night in the Pandu Lakeside
accommodation which was OK but not…magic.
Pete left me there in the afternoon, prone upon the large bed listening
to podcasts.* He was on a mission: to find our HappyPlace on Samosir.
I think he made
many friends along the way; now when we walk down the road, he gets a very
cheery welcome and cries of “Hello Peter!”
He found lots of beautiful places but he knows that life is not a
HappyPlace when the mattress is hard** so he kept on keeping on until he found
his beautiful little room, one of five, I think.
We have only just
arrived here and I have already improved myself immensely by having a HOT
shower…oh the bliss!***
Our current garden, with gentle gardener gently sweeping the lawn |
Pete signing us up to stay in this dear little room - serious business! |
* Or rather, NOT
listening to podcasts… So sorry Alain de
Boton; I know your hour-long interview with Richard Fidler was very interesting
but…I had the most crashing sinus headache and I just fell into merciful
oblivion…
** Princess
Marguerite is hard to please…
*** A hot shower
is very improving of one’s sinus-y headache, and one's possibly cranky disposition...
**** We will gloss very the fact that we got simply terrible food in parapet…a good thing we are still alive after trying to eat fish which was so very far from fresh, or even freshly frozen, that it made our fillings throb. The food here in Samosir is – wonderful! Fabulous VERY fresh fish!
