Mum has sent me this post in a very brief moment of internet connectivity.
We are at 13 degrees south (latitude) 143 degrees (longitude). We arew anchored off beautiful little Night Island, only recently risen from the sea. It consists of a tiny sandy beach and a dense forest of mangroves. We are very grateful for the shelter and for the beauty. There are turtles, lifting their heads to look at us quizzically before sinking back into the balmy sea. And wood pigeons in their thousands, roosting in the mangroves and cooing away like crazy. And...crocodiles for certain and for sure... Sailing up the coast of far Northern Queensland has been quite wonderful. Breath-taking in fact. A vast expanse of beaches, mountains, forest, mangroves. And all, as far as we can tell, inhospitable and uninhabited. We left the Flinders Group of island early this morning, after a fabulous afternoon walk from one side to teh other of one of the islands, to look at Aboriginal cave art. This island was (is!) a veritable Garden of Eden. Fruiting trees, a gigantic sheltering cave with a welcoming sandy floor, well above the reach of crocs. Glorious! So is everything just too perfect and idyllic in 2XS World? Well...we are very happy and having fun but... Pete is covered in itchy bites. And I have a painful little unidentified spine in my little toe, which bothers me about two percent of the time. And our main kitchen fridge has had to be turned off because of a gas leak issue which will have to be fixed on Thursday Island. So we are moving things uneasily around the boat from one small spare fridge to the other hoping everything holds together until...we get to Thursday Island. Tomorrow - Portlands Roads, which is inhabited and which MIGHT have a shop and a post office, and then Forbes Islet, where we MIGHT be able to swim.
