More cautionary
tales for unwary sailors and travellers in the northern areas of Australia…
Our friends Janet
and Alex have recently been on a beautiful ten day boat trip in the Kimberly. Just lovely, but…their instructions were: DON’T trail your hand in the water; don’t
even reach out over the edge of the boat.
Snappety SNAP!

At morning tea one
day they had visitors from a yacht moored nearby. Very nice people having a lovely holiday in
this beautiful region. They told a terrifying
story… There was another yacht anchored near their boat. Nobody was aboard; the dinghy wasn’t there. Not a problem – they were obviously exploring
the tributaries. A day or two passed and
still no dinghy so they very sensibly went for a little exploratory trip to see
if they could see any sign of their invisible neighbours. As they went past a tall cliff they heard shouting,
and saw two people frantically waving…
These poor people
had been happily exploring. They decided
to walk up the cliffs to see if they could find a waterhole safe for swimming.
And yes indeed; it was lovely up there, free from danger. But down below the water line a very angry
crocodile, baulked of its prey, had attacked and destroyed their poor little inflatable
dinghy. They were stuck; no way of getting
back to their boat. Imagine how
delighted they must have been after four whole days waiting in fear…
