The long weekend is slipping away…full of social events and boat-cleaning.
Yesterday Pete spent a few thrill-packed hours down inside the
engine hatch, pumping out hideous oil sludge.
I had a slightly less ghastly task – cleaning out the hatch under the
helm, where we store what I thought was a nice, pleasant collection of flippers
masks and snorkels but which turned out to be bit of a hellmouth, full of rusty
cans of something-or-another along, yes, with the snorkels, masks and
unidentifiable bits of hose and pipe which might
come in useful one day. All floating
in a thin layer of slimy muck. When I
had lugged everything out it was time to clean out the compartment…with a
scrubbing brush, some Dettol-infused water, a hose… It wasn’t as satisfying as
it might have been because I couldn’t reach into the murky depths of the
compartment, where a whole lot of the silt had gathered to lie in wait for a
come-back. I had to entice Pete into the
area, with his longer arms, for this cheery project.
But…it’s all good. Pete is
going to make a light platform of marine ply for the masks and snorkels, so
that they can still be in this handy compartment without having to roll around
in slime and sludge, and we have thrown out a few totally useless items – for
example, a dog-lead with a rusted clasp – why was it there???
