8th February - James and Bron - Ao Bang Thao to Ao Karon - jellyfish

Saturday 8th February

Hot news – James and Bron are engaged!  No this didn’t happen in Romantic Langkawi, or Romantic Thailand – it happened back in Romantic Hobart!  We are all delighted. Of course!

Ao Bang Thao is very beautiful.  A long (8km) beach, and MUCH less activity and noise than at Patong Beach.

Yesterday we awoke to the sound of longtail boats (they are inevitably noisy) and saw a line of them up and down the beach, scooping big fat jellyfish out of the water.  We are not sure if they are paid by the resorts to keep the beach jellyfish-free, or whether they are taking them home to eat.  We certainly haven’t seen them on any menu…

Our first evening here we dumped ourselves and our dinghy, with little dignity, onto the beach.  I tripped and did a little dance in the shallows; Pete tripped and fell right into the sea.  His entire left side was drenched; his right side, where his phone is kept, was completely dry.  I think next time I will insist on his phone going into my dry bag…just in case…The sea here is very smooth but just on shore, the waves chop and tug and trip us over. Apparently.)

We wandered along the shore, going in and out of ENORMOUS resorts.  No security at all; we were able to stroll about at will, gazing at a series of swimming pools, some with waterslides.  The reception areas were immense, full of beautiful objets , flower arrangements and water features.

Thai food is simply delicious.  We have had beautiful meals, very cheap for the most part, and full of entrancing flavours.  Except for this meal and a beachfront restaurant… The staff were very pleasant and friendly but…Pete said he wouldn’t go back there if someone paid him…

The featured dish which looks like deep-fried doughnuts is supposed to be delicate tempura vegetables...
Our drinks, however, were pretty.

I haven’t ever ordered a blue cocktail before – this one was called something like Magic Beach Hawk.  (WHY??)

In the afternoon we cruised back down the coast and anchored off Karon Beach.  We had ben there by road, so it was very interesting to see this beautiful place from the water.  Not so many shops in sight, from our angle.  Just a few gigantic resorts…

And the back of the giant Buddha on the hill.

We sat on the deck for our pre-dinner drinks and watched…people flying by!

Today – we remember, with love and sadness, George Darcey, 8/2/06
