8th October - South China Sea - equator - Nongsa Point marina

Tuesday 8th October

1 degree north
108 degrees east

Yes indeed!  We have crossed the equator!!  This happened at 5pm yesterday, in the middle of the South China Sea.  And this is what it looked like…

We weren’t able to celebrate with King Neptune but we did have a very nice celebratory G & T before resuming our 3-hour watches.

It took us two long days and two long nights to get to our destination, but here we are, at Nongsa Point Marina, on Battam Island.  We are in sight of Singapore, just across the way… So yes we have come a LONG way.  It is, by the way, very nice here… At 8.30 Pete and I were swimming in the azure waters of a large, irregular shaped pool.  All of our washing is whirring away in efficient-looking machines.  I think the towels will be particularly grateful to get a proper wash and rinse…they really don’t get a fair go, being stomped on in a bucket of soapy water by me…

But…we want to go… Sam (SailIndonesia) sent our paperwork ahead of us, from Belitung, with a covering letter that it was urgent for 2XS & crew to get clearance out of the country.  There is an office (Customs & Immigration) right here at the marina and we have presented our passports and other necessary documents, well before 9am.  But…maybe it will get done today…and maybe it won’t…

We can’t leave from here, unfortunately.  We have to get into Malaysia because out Indonesian visas will expire and we won’t be allowed back in – all this bureaucracy…

So in the meantime…a day of rest, washing, recuperating…

And another lovely bit of Borubudur...

5th October - Belitung

Saturday 5th October

We will be leaving Belitung at first light tomorrow, because we have to get to Singapore as soon as possible so we can fly home.  It wasn’t possible to leave today because there is a lot of paperwork involved in leaving Indonesia and we had to wait till Sam SailIndonesia was here to collect up all of our red tape and forward it post-haste to our point of exit.

So we have had a reasonably leisurely day, with a free shuttlebus trip into the main town, Menggar, which is proudly home to (literally!) 1001 coffee shops.  This is a lot, for a population of 100,000!!

Here is part of the welcoming committee, including the Telkomsel Girl, who boosted up my internet simcard, along with a lot of help from The Team.

Yesterday we came across a party of tourists, in a shiny new bus.  They were from Djakarta, enjoying a 52 year school reunion… All second generation Chinese, and all very cheerful and affluent.  Our new friend, Mr Leung, is still working, running his successful group on theme parks.  He told us he is 72, and when we commented on his youthful appearance he said, “Oh, that is easy!  Stem cells!  VERY cheap, in Indonesia!”

Tonight is – yes – a Gala Dinner, with speeches and dancing… Pete and I had a late lunch at one of the restaurants along the beach.  I wish I could bottle the sweet & sour fish soup…SO delicious!!  With that, and a grilled fish to share, we should be right for tonight – gala dinner food is always served very late, after many m-a-n-y speeches… There are about 20 boats here, mostly tossing around in the bay, although others have cleverly inserted themselves into the harbour, wedged up against fishing boats and not having to brave the waves.

The village organisers have put in a floating pontoon for us to tie up our dinghies, which is good because going up on the sand is very daunting – the beach is very steep and he waves quite ferocious.  The pontoon has been greeted with glad cries by the local children, as you can see from the photo at the top of the page…

Unfortunately they also see our dinghies as yet another thrilling floaty toy…

Not sure when next we will be in internet range; we have many miles to go, quite a few overnighters to get through…

farewell

2nd October & 4th October - Java to Karimunjawa to Belitung

Wednesday 2nd October

So where are we??

Yes!  Back on2XS!  Oh joy…home…

Did we go on this overloaded little boat??

with our new German BFF Marco?

Well no…. We hung about, crouching pathetically on the bamboo deck for a few hours while the engine when brrm brrm brrm chugga chugga chugga…nothing…nothing…nothing…

I got off the boat and found a toilet on a huge idle ferry nearby, with the aid of kindly Marco…

I was terrified to be on this boat for six hours, with a dozen men and NO toilet facilities.  And then I got terrified to be stuck sitting on a wobbly little cardboard thingy on deck, for six hours – oh no, achey breaky back…so I got off and strolled up and down the concrete wharf for a while.

brrm brrm brrm chugga chugga chugga…nothing…nothing…nothing…

Pete had been busy on his phones for a while and suddenly he galvanised into action – aha!  We had plane tickets!

PLANE

No not $25, which  it would have been on dodgy overloaded boat… More like $550… And first a car, to drive from Jepara to Semrang…

I was very happy….just quietly…

We drove nicely (thank you Michael aka Roy) the three or so hours from one big city to the other, and then we were on this nice little plane, and back on our dear little island, with 2XS sitting quietly on its mooring, guarded by kindly Jan, from SV Avanta.

Oh joy to be home!

On the way we told Michael aka Roy that we had stayed in a mosquito infested hotel.  Oh yes, he said, that must have been the Segoro. It is famous for its mosquitos.  The dreaded nyamook!!

Jan picked us up from the wharf and then we went out for dinner…  Kind Captain Pete shouted us all this very delicious meal, approx. $2 each… I had mie goreng, seafood - yummo!

Tomorrow SV Avanata and SV 2Xs are up and away, at 6am, heading for Belitung.  Not sure when next we will be in range but…we will be!  Eventually!

Friday 4th October

2 degrees south
108 degrees east

Pete says we are more or less 40 degrees north and 40 degrees west of Tasmania!!

We have just arrived at Belitung, where there are cheery flags out to greet the fleet.  I think there are six rally boats here, including 2XS and Avanta.  Maybe more will come and our little city-on-the-sea will re-form in yet another beautiful place.  The beach is full of cheery little local sailing boats, all the colours of the rainbow, as Zoe would say…

We left at 5am yesterday morning and got here at 1.45 this afternoon.  All went well.  Yes there were dozens of fishing boats, even way out to sea, 150 nautical miles from land, but they weren’t playing dodgem cars with us so we were quite happy to see them shining brightly on the horizon.  The other good thing was…I wasn’t sick, even though my magic scopatch fell off quite early in the piece, never to be seen again…

1st October - stranded in Jepara (Java)

Tuesday 1st October

Maybe photos will be forbidden...I will try!!

So are we back, safely rocking in our little cabin on 2XS?  Well no…we are in a very nice hotel in Jepara, stranded…

This was the view from the ferry terminal:

The ferry was not like this at all; it looked like a small cruise liner – in fact you an see it, looking large and solid, in the background.  But…there we were, at 10.45, expecting to leave at 11.00, and the time came and went…I made lovely new friends, from Switzerland (French speaking)

Alain &Laure-Anne

who had been waiting there since 7.30am, with their toddler…

Laure-Anne & Mae-Lisse
And still we did not go.  Eventually we were told it was much too rough and that the ferry wouldn’t be going at all, although the ferry from Karimunjawa was was ploughing its way merrily across the very same bit of water… Maybe, they have told us, merrily, it won’t go tomorrow either.  Or any day this week… So we are not sure how to get to our poor boat…and we are running to a tight tight TIGHTER schedule…

Last night we stayed in a nice green motel in the city centre

the Segoro.  All very pleasant, for approx. $20, with a comfy mattress – well two comfy mattresses; they didn’t believe in double beds… There was a big deep bath and a hot HOT shower, which made Pete very happy. I found it very hard to get any of the water actually to squirt anywhere near where I was standing in the big deep bath – it was very random, and managed to wet every bit of the bathroom, including the toilet roll, while avoiding the person standing directly in its path.  (Pete was just tall enough to be in the line of fire, so to speak.)

Borobudur detail
Breakfast was included and was very delicious – a rather fiery mixture of rice mixed with crunchy peanuts, with hard boiled eggs.  Not what we usually eat but….bring it on!

The only thing wrong with the Segoro was…we urgently learned a new and very important word…nyamook.  MOSQUITO!!  Our Swiss friends had been staying there as well, and they too became very familiar with this word.  The walls were dotted with squashy bloodstains, and I added quite a few, with gusto, while Pete lay, exhausted, on his bed (he is improving but its still not well…)  I went out to reception to see if they had a mosquito coil, and the young bloke on duty came out to our room with a very large can of squirty poison.  He went about his task with grim determination and it is a miracle that Pete and I didn’t die from the fumes.  But at least the nyamooks were beaten into submission!!

We had a few hours to fill in this morning, so we took a taxi up the road to the furniture shop area.  Around Ubud there are absolutely hundreds of furniture warehouses.  They are VERY creative, in Bali.  They make pottery, wood carvings, paper mache, picture frames, batik… EVERYTHING.

Working in a total sawdust cloud
But here in Java they are just as industrious.  The woodwork was extraordinary.  So ornate!

A handy little pavilion
Some things were so very beautiful

and very cheap – this bench was around $70…

A stand for a glass-topped dining table..
others breathtaking in their, ahem, detail…

We had a lovely time posing on furniture

Until our driver waved at us a bit frantically from the doorway – Pete’s watch had stopped and we might be late for the ferry.

Well we would have been late…had it been a happening thing…

We are now at the Hotel Samuda, a few hundred metres from the ferry terminal.  It is very nice indeed.  About $27 per night, for a deluxe room (yes with double bed…) No mosquitoes, a water view through the fish-embossed windows.  Tomorrow I will take a photo of some of the amazing woodwork around all of the doorways.

We had a very nice lunch.  Bintang, NEARLY cold, and seafood nasi goreng.  Pete had a piece of chicken and some chips with chili sauce; it all cost around $7, with room service.  We have a large balcony where we can sit, if we so choose, and look out over the VERY calm sea, towards where 2XS lies waiting…

In the meantime, another bit of Borobudur:

There were anti-vandalism signs everywhere which I suppose is a good thing...
